Ah, food. It used to be so simple. Time was, if you had an adequate amount, it tasted OK and it didn't make you sick, you could count yourself one of Earth's fortunate children. It was like sex that way. Now, eating is like, well, sex. You can be damn sure that however much you're getting isn't the right amount and that someone else is going about it in a much more creative, exciting fashion. Oh, and a cultured person must possess much more knowledge plus a smattering of impractical French to be counted among the fully evolved. Why, the lowly meat-and-potato-eaters wail, must we know what sous vide or buerre blanc or ménage à trois even means? Is everything a competition? Yes, pilgrim it is. Sorry. But don't you worry. In food, at least, the Dallas Observer can help you get in with the in crowd. From 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. the Observer and Whole Foods brings Iron Fork to the Fashion Industry Gallery, 1807 Ross Ave. Watch as returning champion chef Scott Romano battles TJ Lengnick of Whiskey Cake to see who can turn a basket of ingredients into something only a French speaker could properly describe. Restaurateur Kent Rathbun will moderate the competition center stage as spectators taste dishes from more than 30 local restaurants. The evening also features live music, wine, beer and cocktail samplings along with a “mixologist station” (or, as the French would call it, “oon muthair-effeeng bar”). General admission tickets are $35; VIP passes are $70 and part of the money benefits the March of Dimes. Visit observerironfork.com for more info.
