Hope You Have The Time Of Your Life

You understand that because Green Dayhas managed to have American Idiot adapted into a Broadway show, anything is possible — right? Think of the possibilities. Carrie Brownstein of Sleater Kinney waxed poetic on this very topic a few years ago when the show first hit the stage, suggesting works by The Jam, The Kinks and Patti Smith. Sure, those would probably be cool. But come on, people … we’re missing the obvious here. There are Public Enemy albums just dying for a retelling. It Takes a Nation of Millions To Hold Us Back or Fear of a Black Planet would fully wipe up Broadway with the remnants of The Book of Mormon if either were produced. It would be genius. It would be amazing. And it would be all thanks to Billie Joe Armstrong and company, who allowed director Michael Mayer to take a narrative thread from their album and turn it into a respectable Broadway run and national touring production. Don’t think of this as the Green Day musical; think of it as a harbinger of a real Broadway breakthrough. American Idiotplays at the Winspear Opera House, 2403 Flora St., from May 8 until May 20.
