A Gunpowder Social

Baseball debacle or no, everybody still wants to be like Mike. In fact, artist Sergio Garcia has been wearing Air Jordans since the 80s. When it came to choosing an iconic cultural image for his upcoming exhibition, Social, the signature kicks couldn’t have been more appropriate for his silk-screen series “Heat.” Playing with the dual implications of “heat” in hip-hop culture – it refers to both a “pair of rare and highly sought after tennis shoes” as well as its more obvious reference to a gun – Garcia creates his prints using gunpowder to drive home the message reiterated in a favorite Michael Jordan quote, “Always turn a negative situation into a positive situation.” Social is on exhibition at Kirk Hopper Fine Art from May 11 through June 9, and Garcia will be on-hand at 3008 Commerce St. on Friday, May 11 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. for an artist’s reception. Call 214-760-9230, or visit kirkhopperfineart.com.
