Thanks to television and film adaptations, the phrase “Friday night lights” has become part of the pop-culture vernacular. Of course, before the movie and the successful series was the best-selling book from 1990, and before the book there was its author, Buzz Bissinger. In his latest book, Father's Day, the chronicler of West Texas high school football focuses on his own role as father. The nonfiction tale centers on a lengthy road-trip that he made with his mentally challenged son Zach. The book spares no painful detail or agonizing thought. The New York Times recently declared that Father’s Day is “the work of a writer with an unflinching gift for honesty, and impossible to put down.” Bookworms will almost all agree: The tough reads are often the most rewarding.
