Slip the Surly Bonds

Oh, boy. Oh, boy. Things that fly low and fast. Things that fly slow and glow. Things that fly and dance and twist. We’re talking air show, people AIR SHOW! OK, gotta calm down now, but really, who cannot love an air show? Besides, that is, a certain spouse who shall remain nameless and can haul herself elsewhere while her big man-child husband vrooms off to Mesquite Metro Airport, 1340 Airport Blvd. in Mesquite, to the Take to the Skies AirFest this Memorial Day weekend. Aerobatic flights by an Extra (that’s a really cool plane) plus flights by T28 Trojans, a MiG 17 fighter, air races, formation flying and a tethered, nighttime hot-air balloon-lighting are some of the highlights of a festival that lets grounded, RC-flying dreamers get up close to the things that make us go wow. Admission is $5, and kids younger than 6 are admitted for free, which is totally unfair to the bigger kids, but still pretty cheap for a thrill. The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. Check out taketotheskiesairfest.com for a full list of things to see and do.
Sat., May 26, 10 a.m.-9 p.m.; Sun., May 27, 10 a.m.-7 p.m., 2012
