What a bunch of wusses those kids at Horace B. Smedley School are. When their kindhearted teacher Miss Nelson can no longer take her students’ unruly behavior and disappears, the kiddies are instantly cowed by her stern, ruler-waving replacement, Miss Viola Swamp. Hah. In my day (ca. 1847-50), any class that couldn’t break the spirit of the baddest substitute teacher alive wouldn’t dare show its face on the playground. We didn’t fear sternness. We considered it a challenge. See how the Smedley sissies fare at getting their dear Miss Nelson back as Texas Woman’s University drama program performs Miss Nelson Is Missing: The Musical, based on the popular children’s story by Harry Allard and James Marshall, with book, music and lyrics by Joan Cushing. The show runs June 14-24. Thursday performances are at 1 p.m., with additional shows Fridays-Sunday. Performances take place at the Redbud Theater Complex on TWU’s Denton campus. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. For tickets and information, visit txu.edu/drama or call 940-898-2020.
