As you sit there, making out with that sandwich, there are people taking flight in Fort Worth. The Modern Dance Festival runs through July 21 and is filled with magnificently angular people doing explosively choreographed performances, and today you can see one of the best things of all: the local premieres of three short films. Here’s the deal with modern dance films: They’re rad. They’re spooky. People fly in circles and casually leap onto one another’s heads while wearing impeccably ironed three-piece suits. They are films David Lynch would make if he’d stop meditating for a second and learn about modern dance. In Coup De Grâce, two men meet in an abandoned castle after a long falling out. They spend the night dueling, without weapons. Labyrinth Within gives us a peek into the jealous and vengeful life shared by a couple with a nearly infinitely sprawling home. Hair is pulled, then ruffled. Skin is flattened and pressed. Letter openers are tucked behind their backs as they glide and leap from room to room. Sand takes a different approach. This short film about the dying art of tap dancing where sand takes the place of formal shoes fills you with giddy joy. The short films are free and begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Modern (3200 Darnell St., Fort Worth). Visit themodern.org.
