Dan Wolman’s beautifully shot 2010 film Gei Oni(Valley of Fortitude) depicts a young woman and her baby seeking a new life in late 19th-century Palestine after escaping a Russian pogrom. An adaptation of Shulamit Lapid’s best-selling historical novel by the same name, Gei Oni has its Dallas premier as part of the 16th annual Jewish Film Festival of Dallas at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Part historical narrative and part love story, the movie follows a young woman named Fania (Tamar Alkan) as she meets and marries a widowed farmer, all the while hiding a terrible secret from her past. Wolman’s film is a historical snapshot of cultural meshing as well as a linguistic adventure; English subtitles translate Yiddish, Hebrew, Arabic, Russian, Turkish and Romanian. Tickets for the Studio Movie Grill screening (11170 North Central Expressway) are $10. For more information, visit jccdallas.org.
