Here in Dallas we like to fiddle with things, which is why we’re known globally as a hub for art and technology. The largest possible convergence of both happens Wednesday when the Dallas VideoFest kicks off its 25th year with a program called “Expanded Cinema,” where local video artists will hijack the lighting scheme of the Omni Hotel to project their own work. Prepare for Dallas to get real Blade Runner-y as those participating conquer the building’s unique challenges, like the long gaps of negative space that fill in each vertical level and the curvacious, wraparound shape that doesn’t allow normal start and end point as one would find on a computer monitor or canvas. Some of Dallas’ best minds are working on the project, which gets even more spectacular when you turn on your radio. Each artist has composed a soundtrack for their program that will simulcast live on KKXT-FM 91.7. So find a good spot (we will have recommendations on our arts blog, dallasobserver.com/mixmaster), and enjoy the show. And remember, Dallas VideoFest begins Thursday the 27th and you’ll want to attend every moment of it. Grab a pass at videofest.org. The Omni show is free, tickets for VideoFest can be purchased singly or as a pass. The fest proper will be at the Dallas Museum of Art (1717 N. Harwood St.).
