It’s never going to be easy for a victim of sexual assault. And despite the fact that we’ve come a long way in offering support for sexual assault survivors, all you need to do is look at the comments section of a news story related to the issue to see that a lot of people still don’t get it. A recent gem from a story about a local campus rape included a description of alleged rapists as “poor young men;” earlier this summer a young woman raped after leaving a bar was admonished repeatedly for daring to walk alone to her car. The Dallas County Sexual Assault Coalition’s (SAC) Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event aims to bring awareness to the plight of victims and engage men as part of the solution to the problem of sexual violence. Beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, guys can quite literally take a stand against sexual assault by pulling on a pair of high heels and hoofing it for 5,280 feet. Scared of stilettos? No worries, your tennis shoes will work just fine. Registration is at the Diamond Doctor, 8127 Preston Road, for $35; women and children can walk for $25. All proceeds go to the Dallas County SAC.
