More than just an experimental cinematic playground, Texas Theatre is an unconventional nightlife hub, a film festival nucleus and a reassuring Jefferson Boulevard business anchor. But life wasn’t always this way. The Oak Cliff Foundation purchased the historic building in 2001 with a financial leg-up from a few dozen generous local donors. They preserved the dignity of the digs and eventually handed over the rental keychain to Aviation Cinemas, who have gussied the place up even more, adding the bar and other domestic improvements. But there’s still a lot to do. The crew has located an 80-year-old plumbing leak in the walls that needs fixing, which could mean other structural issues have gone undetected. Plus, there’s that glorious balcony. The OCF would like to give it a face-lift and make it operational, which would expand the seating of the venue. Keeping a historical building from deteriorating isn’t an inexpensive task, so Thursday the Oak Cliff Foundation reaches out to the community with a fundraiser at Texas Theatre (231 W. Jefferson Blvd.). They’ve spread the word to their original donor circle, and they’d like you to show up too. For $1,000 you can have your name put on a seat at the Texas Theatre — any seat you like. For Thursday evening only, there’ll also be a selection of seats near the back (aka: make-out row) that you can pick from for $500. If that’s still an unreachable amount, a $100 donation gets you a gift bag with T-shirts, tickets, bar tabs and the sloppiest of high fives. The event runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. And they’d love you to RSVP@oakclifffoundation.org. Visit oakclifffoundation.org. JAMIE LAUGHLIN
