Dallas: One of our own needs us. Patrick Short, the 26-year-old man behind the now-closed alternative arts space Guerilla Arts, has been diagnosed with anapalastic oligodendroglioma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. The discovery happened in a highly unpredictable way. He’d worked to get into Yale’s architecture program for years, and when that acceptance letter arrived, he rushed off to New Haven to follow his dreams. But then something shifted inside him. He couldn’t focus like everyone else in the program, and it wasn’t for a lack of wanting. Short began spending late nights in the studio, trying to stay caught up. The school decided he couldn’t keep pace and dropped him, leaving Short without health insurance or a job. He soon went to a doctor, complaining of double vision. A CAT scan then revealed the massive tumor — the growth responsible for stunting his career, his life and his financial house. Now he’s out of resources. I want to wrap a giant hug around him, but instead I, like you, will go to RO2 Art on Friday and spend whatever I have in the silent auction, which will raise funds for Short’s living arrangements and treatment. There’s a massive list of contributing artists, so it’ll be easy to find a place to put your money.
