His work has been collected by the Guggenheim, the Tate Gallery, the MOMA and pretty much every other major institution worldwide, and yet we get a chance to see the work of Boston University professor John Walker in the Carillon Gallery of Tarrant County College South (5301 Campus Drive, Fort Worth). (Don’t overthink it, just consider yourself lucky.) We’ll get a combination of scale in this exhibition, titled simply New Paintings, where larger, more traditional-sized pieces will accompany selections from Walker’s Bingo Card series, in which he paints intimately detailed, bafflingly passionate landscapes on the surface of reclaimed gambling stationery. In those, you might notice the original grids peeking through, teasing out elements of time and making winky plays on space. Regardless of what lies deep below, even at his work’s most immediate surface you’ll find an enchanting, almost historical beauty. Join John Walker at the opening of New Paintings, which runs from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday. Visit tccd.edu. It’s free to attend.
