FenCon is not a pedestrian science fiction and fantasy convention. FenCon is a bastion for fans of literary science fiction, with a heavy emphasis on science, literature and music, and this weekend is its 10th iteration, at Crowne Plaza Hotel, 14315 Midway Road in Addison. Since it’s a member of the sci-fi convention species, there will of course be a costume contest, which happens during the FenCon Cabaret, but there are also more ponderous events (no offense meant to the costumers, we have the utmost respect for what you do). There are lyric-writing workshops, a poetry workshop called “Beyond Gilgamesh” and, naturally, “Look Who’s 50! Rampant Speculation About Doctor Who,” among a bunch of others. There are also FenKids events for children — or anyone young enough to have topics like Asian folklore in popular fantasy (“Tao and Again”) go over his head — including workshops for both writing and costume-making. Visit fencon.org for more information.
