It's Time to Abandon the Catholic Church

Dear Mexican: I’m a Mexican-American Catholic who is really upset about something I saw after Mass last night. As I waited for my son to come out of confirmation class (yes, I had already attended Mass myself), I noticed something really odd. I saw a grocery cart parked by a curb. It was odd because it was filled with all those things a vendor sells at parks. Then I noticed another weird thing … some lady setting up a little table by the front doors of the church with assorted items to sell. WOW! Was I really seeing this? What is going on with people? Have we become so desperate for money we are now hitting up churches like we do parks? I’m not sure if you have seen or heard of this before. I was really offended by this. I am also struggling financially like so many. I live paycheck to paycheck but I still don't think I could resort to this. I felt it was tacky and just adds to the stereotypes we already have to deal with. What do you think of this? Dazed and Confused Mexican

Dear Wabette: You have issues with working-class folks trying to make a buck after Mass, thinking it tacky. You know what else is tacky? A Catholic Church hierarchy that allowed priests to rape boys and girls for decades and not only did nothing to stop it, they protected said pedophiles from the cops and joined their congregants in smearing victims and critics who pointed out the obvious — priestly pedophilia no es bueno. And guess what? More than a few of those victims were — you guessed it! — Mexicans. But since the church has done such a masterful job of brainwashing Mexican Catholics into believing that speaking out against the hierarchy is speaking out against God, our raza in the States has universally remained silent about this sex-abuse scandal — hell, you still see Latino politicos and immigrant-rights activists asking for the blessings of pendejos who should be spending life in prison for their cover-ups. Pray to God, pray to La Virgen de Guadalupe, even to La Santa Muerte if you must — but any Mexican who still gives money to the church might as well also donate to la migra.

I know why the Mexican man digs in the trashcan: He can't believe what Americans throw away. My mom was from Northern Ireland, and we got many treasures over the years from walking past our neighbors' trashcans. She grew up dirt-poor and could not believe all the things Americans would waste and throw away. She honestly felt it was sinful. I dug through trashcans myself and had several yard sales over the years, which helped put me through college Mary in Oregon

Dear Gabacha: Gracias for answering your own pregunta so thoughtfully — please don’t do it again, lest I get reduced to spinning tejanas on my finger at street corners for a living.

Why did all the conquerors came from Europe? And why were Africans conquered as slaves, instead of Latinos? Are we more rebellious, and not easy to control? Latina Grrl

Dear Wabette: Latinos not slaves? Look at Mexican Catholics.

Arrelano should be telling the Raza to clean up it's act chopping people's heads off in Mexico instead of dumping this racist crap at people.

Actually, two of the questions in this column are somewhat related.  Why weren't indigenous Latin and South American peoples enslaved by European (principally Spanish) conquerors?  Short answer: Because of the Catholic Church that our columnist so obviously despises.  The first papal statement condemning race-based slavery came out in 1435.  In 1537, a papal Bull was issued to the "universal church" that read, in part, "He (Satan) has stirred up some of his allies who, desiring to satisfy their own avarice, are presuming to assert far and wide that the Indians...be reduced to our service like brute animals, under the pretext that they are lacking the Catholic faith."

It is no mere accident of geography that slavery vanished - and vanished early - in Spanish Colonial Central and South America. And it’s especially astonishing given the long history of slavery among the indigenous cultures that dominated these areas.  I'm not excusing the conquering people of any other abuses and mistreatment to the locals, just saying that Catholicism proved to be a tempering influence in the fight against the expansion of slavery.

Are illegal mexicans going to be required to show they applied to receive Obamacare on their fraudulent tax returns created with their stolen social security numbers?

what was done to those poor children is horrible.  that the church back then tried to cover it up was also terrible, but that was common practice up til recently.  we can't apply today's strict standards on the way things were done before.  we know now, clearly, what must be done in such cases and if it happens again we should hold all institutions up to those standards.  it's easy to bash.  too easy.  and this guy's argument is so stale.

I think your criticism of the Church is outdated. While there have been many abuses in the Catholic Church, as there are and will continue to be in EVERY large institution, the positive result is that the Catholic Church, I think it is safe to say,  fosters the safest environment for children than any other educational institution in the United States, due to the strict guidelines that they now follow.   Do you have any evidence to the contrary? In that light, how do you justify your coninued trashing the Church? Could it be that the real reason you trash the Church is that you reject its most excellent teaching on morality?

@stephenfrankini having the leader of an organization pledge to not have sex with women or adult men, is obviously going to attract people that don't want to have sex with women or adult men.  Add to that the supervision of kids and you have the perfect storm for nambla.  The Catholic church is evil, the pope lives in a palace.  The baptists are evil, Im pretty damn sure the Unitarians are evil to, trying to collect all the other churches scraps - and the tithings that come with.  Religion is the Worlds greatest PONZI scheme.

@stephenfrankini No other institution has ever had the problems with pedophiles like the Catholic church has had. That alone is going to be a tough one to live down. Expect people trashing (and rightfully so) the Catholic church for many many years.

What a nice christian thing to say. Lash out at someone's mother for speaking their mind. It will be OK, go beat your wife, rape your daughters 14yr old friend, rob the liquor store...

Just do ten hail mary's send a check to the catholic church and you will be absolved of your sins...

Sound about right for your average weekend

It is far worse in the protestant religion, and public school system. Did you see the recent press release from the grandson of Billy Graham, attesting that the problem is far worse in their own protestant faiths? Probably not, most of the main stream media did not cover it because it would have deflated their anti-Catholic agenda. Evil is amongst us everywhere, including our churches. In the catholic faith alone, four percent of the priests were either proven guilty, or suspected of committing some type of sexual crime. That also means ninety-six percent of the priests are good, devout men. Same with the protestant faiths, I don't know the percentages with them, but I would feel safe to assume they are low like the catholics. Same with our public school system.

Irregardless where it is happening at, it is a hideous crime, and needs to be stopped. The Catholic Church has become very aggressive in fighting this evil in their institution (reports of abuse you see in the media now actually happened over twenty plus years ago). What about the other institutions? Many are still sweeping theirs under the rug.

Yes, there isn't as much pedophilia in the military because children aren't allowed in the military.
Nevertheless, according to Wikipedia: "The Department of Defense estimates there are about 19,000 sexual assaults in the military per year". So you might want to wait to see how things play out before you make such comparisons with the Church -- that is unless you are prepared to backup your assertions with numbers.

@stephenfrankini Any other institution, whether it be religious, community like (Boy Scouts or ROTC), or any military institution. Basically, the Catholic church sex scandal has been the biggest pedophile scandal (outside of the sex slave market in other countries maybe) the world has ever seen.
