It’s not unusual to put on extra pounds between the end of October and the start of January. Most people wait until the new year to do something about it, starting gym memberships or loading up on fiber supplements in well-intentioned attempts at resolutions. Why not try a new tactic this year? Instead of waiting until after you’ve gorged yourself on pecan pie, be proactive and get your heart rate and metabolism firing before you even sit down to eat. The YMCA Turkey Trot has been going on for 46 years now, and you can sign up to run or walk for either a 5K or an 8-mile course. The race starts at 9 a.m. Thursday at City Hall Plaza, 1500 Marilla St., and registration is $40 on the day of the event. Any runners who want their race to be timed must pay a $5 fee. Proceeds go to benefit a variety of YMCA programs, including its urban swim program and the Live Strong at the YMCA Cancer Collaborative. Visit thetrot.org.
