More About

Few cultures knew how to mess up a family as efficiently as the Greeks. The story of Oedipus is the granddaddy of all messed-up families, but it’s actually only the first part of the story. Aeschylus continued it with two more parts, the last of which is Seven Against Thebes, essentially a story of two brothers going to war against each other. Because this is the time of year when dealing with family becomes unavoidable, it’s the perfect time for SMU to present the modernized, hip-hop version of the play, called simply Seven. Written by artist-in-residence Will Power, it incorporates funk, soul, gospel, doo-wop and spoken word, which is appropriate considering that the original play involves an awful lot of talk for a story about war (the Greeks really liked their action to happen off-stage). Seven starts at 8 p.m. Friday at the Greer Garson Theatre in the Owen Arts Center, 6101 Bishop Blvd. on the SMU campus. Tickets are $13 for adults, $10 for seniors and $7 for students. Visit
