Caucasians have gotten off easy when it comes to racial epithets. At worst the light-skinned demographic might get called “cracker,” and anyone who’s said “honky” in the last 30 years has come off sounding more like George Jefferson than H. Rap Brown. Playwright Greg Kalleres has posited that the only term still capable of stinging the soul of 21st century white America is “racist.” The dynamics of white guilt, political correctness and their relationship with commercialism are the underlying themes of Kalleres’ new black comedy (er ... dark comedy?) Honky, which opens 2014’s Out Of The Loop Fringe Festival Thursday at Addison’s WaterTower Theatre, 15650 Addison Road. Featuring commercials glorifying gang violence to sell basketball shoes and a pill that promises to cure racism, Honky’s satire is probably the closest local theatergoers will ever get to a stage production of Putney Swope. Tickets are $10. Visit watertowertheatre.org.
