Here's what we gleaned about Ping Pong Summer, the indie comedy screening at 9:15 p.m. Friday at Texas Theatre, 231 W. Jefferson Blvd.: It's Karate Kid, except with table tennis and hip hop, the beach is on the East Coast, the time is 1985 and Susan Sarandon is Mr. Miyagi. It looks kinda sweet, and if you're firmly in middle age and feeling nostalgic, it should be a safe — extremely safe — bet. Texas Theatre being Texas Theatre, though, they're going to liven things up a bit with a post-movie ping pong tournament and '80s dance party with DJ Hammertimez spinning. So that'll be your moment, kid. Time to pick a paddle and show that snobby rich guy that you might not drive a Beemer to an Oak Cliff art house, but you got heart and know that if you're true to yourself, you can win the tourney and that thin blonde on Richie Rich's arm. When you do though, try not to throw your back out in a celebratory moonwalk on the dance floor, and be prepared to sleep on the couch, 'cause the missus is going to be pissed and/or embarrassed. Tickets are $10, and the movie also screens various times Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday.
