Two issues with this story.
1. The EU did NOT remain cohesive. When you look at video games, books, comics, etc., there were definitely times when they conflicted. That's the problem. Lucas did NOT tend to it the way they should have.
2. The EU is not dead. The message was that it's officially not canon...but they'll take all they want from it. Funny how it looks like two kids about the same age seem to be cast as Han and Leia's...they may not be named the same, but it's currently theorized that the twins from the EU have absolutely survived the purge. Even if the theories are wrong, Disney/Lucas left the door open to use whatever they damn well please from the EU. Just not all of it, as it exists now.
So yeah, this story is a bit dramatic. The EU wasn't a perfect little gem of cohesion, and it's absolutely not just 100% wiped away. Also, the big thing to come of this: Disney now promises that from now on, ALL EU content WILL be canon, and carefully tended to make sure it all gibes together.
