George Gershwin's aria "Summertime" is covered so often that there’s actually an international group devoted to collecting recordings of the song. (I like Janis Joplin's and Billy Stewart's covers the best. So sue me.) But enjoying newer versions is no reason to forget where "Summertime" originally came from: the self-proclaimed American folk opera Porgy and Bess, which the Dallas Opera will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday (and again at 7:30 p.m. Saturday) at the Music Hall at Fair Park. A portion of the proceeds from Thursday's performance will benefit the United Negro College Fund. For tickets, call 214-443-1000 or visit dallasopera.org.
