There are some movies that just could not be made in today's politically correct climate. Blazing Saddles is near the top of that list. There are some jokes in this film that are funny and offensive at the same time, so some viewers will laugh and then feel guilty about it. However, when you consider that this film was written by Mel Brooks and Richard Pryor, it's hard to take the offensive bits at face value. This isn't racial humor at the expense of the races, it's racial humor at the expense of the racists. And anyway, regardless of that politically correct/incorrect stuff, Blazing Saddles is one of the funniest movies ever made. Even if you've seen it 500 times, you will still laugh out loud. So please be grateful that there was a time when a movie like this could be made, because this film is a rolling-in-the-aisles, laugh-till-you-cry masterpiece. Why Harvey Korman didn't win an Academy Award for his performance is one of life's great mysteries. Blazing Saddles plays at midnight Friday and Saturday at the Inwood Theatre, 5458 W. Lovers Lane.
