Be Saucy


We echo the Pulp Fiction-engendered disgust of the idea of Dutch people slathering french fries in mayonnaise. And, unlike our father, we have never been inclined to drown our pinto beans in ketchup; nor will we allow Tabasco sauce to touch any food we plan on consuming. The simple seasonings of salt and pepper, with an occasional venture into soy sauce or brown mustard, are enough for our plebeian tastes. For those at the opposite end of the sauce spectrum, Sur La Table offers "Condimentia: Beyond Mustard and Ketchup," the exploration of a mind-boggling array of chutneys, jams and salsa to complement meats (pomegranate sauce on pork tenderloin), cheeses (pineapple and habañero jelly on baked brie) and seafood (five-olive tapenade on grilled swordfish). Get Lucky

Friday the 13th has a bad rap. Superstitious people stay inside, safe from falling anvils, bottomless potholes and other potentially unlucky experiences. But those who stay inside this Friday night will miss the opening of Lucky 13, works by Suza Kanon and Mark Nelson. Kanon's photo collages are based on landscapes, modern abstractions and political commentaries. Nelson's acrylic paintings on canvas are influenced by graffiti, tattoo art and skateboard culture. Lucky 13 opens with a reception from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. August 13 and runs through September 16 at Art Bar, 2803 Main St. Admission is free. Art Bar is open 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Thursdays through Sundays. A New "Blind Dating"

Not included in the press release heralding the upcoming Dine in the Dark dating party for Dallas singles is this curious morsel of advice: "Participants should wear clothes that look nice but attire that requires no elaborate cleaning instructions." That and other dining à la nuit minutiae can be found on Dine in the Dark's Web site, but many people know about the experience from Sex and the City: Singles first mingle in the bar area of a local restaurant (Dave and Buster's at 7:30 p.m. August 18) and then are led into the pitch-black dining area where they're served a four-course gourmet meal as they recklessly--or prudently, as the case may be--flirt. During dessert, the waiters light candles. The next morning participants can log on to enter the names of the hotties they would like to meet again.
