Did you know that the square dance is the official folk dance of Texas? And you call yourself a Texan. … Well, now’s your chance to show your cultural pride in this state/nation we call home and head out to the Trinity River Audubon center this weekend and take part in something spectacularly as big as Texas. Curators Leila Grothe and Cynthia Mulcahy are taking dance and culture as an art form to the next level with Square Dance: A Community Project. Funded by an Ideal Fund Grant and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, this free-for-all square dance event will bring the whole community together for an evening of fun, food and do-si-dos, featuring music from the Quebe Sisters Band and old school dance calling by licensed caller Wayne Shoemaker. Historic photos of Dallas square dancing on loan from the Dallas Public Library and Dallas City Hall will be projected onto the side of the Antoine Predock-designed Audubon building. Dancers square off from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Saturday at Trinity River Audubon Center, 6500 S. Loop 12. The event is free. Call 214-502-4352 or visit cargocollective.com/squaredance2011.
Sat., Nov. 12, 6-8 p.m., 2011
