Michael Martin Murphey was born in Oak Cliff, but his heart belongs to the deserts and mountains of the Old West. With a background in the California country-folk scene (even playing with Michael Nesmith of The Monkees) Murphey soon realized that his true calling lay in the old-fashioned cowboy songs he grew up with. His biggest hit, "Wildfire," tells the tale of a ghost horse and rider. That's a cowboy music subject for sure. After dabbling in the outlaw country scene in the early '70s, Murphey embraced his true nature and became the veritable poster child for music about riding horses and building campfires and such. Michael Martin Murphey's Cowboy Christmas has been bringing that pioneer spirit to town for a decade and has become a tradition for folks who long for a time when horses were the only vehicles on the road and the closest thing to a cell phone was hollerin' from a mountain top.
