Elm Street Bar Hosts Moda De La Muerta Fashion Show with Dallas Designers Thursday
Just look at those masks...
This Thursday, Elm Street Bar will be home to native Dallas fashion designers Becca Jett and Rosemary Susat and stylists Mayra Ruiz and Toni Martin. Martin and Ruiz, 21, who owns Rag Parlor in Deep Ellum have put together a retro collection of looks pulled straight from the store. Jett and Susat will be showcasing their own original Dia de los Muertos-inspired designs, complete with one-of-a-kind masks. An auction of their outfits will commence following the show, just in time to dress you for this weekend's Halloween parties.
When I met Becca Jett in her Deep Ellum studio, I was dazzled with piles upon piles of brightly-colored, glittery fabrics among the stellar Day of the Dead looks.
"This is perfect," she laughed when Marilyn Manson came up on her shuffle."We are the nobodies who wanna be somebodies."
In addition to her solo design endeavors, she serves as the in-house designer for Rag Parlor, making custom pieces for thrift shoppers seeking something particularly special. Her looks are glammy and gaudy, like a Deep Ellum-style Betsy Johnson.

Rosemary Susat's designs for the show are, in contrast, haunting and ethereal. Her flowing gowns and full-face masks exude an enigmatic theme that complement the punky ensembles in the rest of the show.
The Rag Parlor brings its charm from rack to runway. Comprised of alternative styles from the 80s and 90s, Mayra Ruiz and her stylist Toni Martin have kept Deep Ellum through the decades as the heart and soul of their operation, and their outfits are oozing with the off-kilter charm of the neighborhood we all know and love. The clothes in the store are amazingly affordable: there is nothing in store priced over $20.
Moda de La Muerta kicks off at 9 p.m. Thursday at Elm Street Bar. $7. Musical performances by ELR music. Drink specials, door prizes. Rag Parlor show at 10 p.m. Becca Jett and Rosemary Susat at 11 p.m . A Silent Auction follows fashion show . Highest bidders announced at midnight.
