The roads are covered with slick ice and have turned the entire Dallas/Fort Worth traffic populace into n deadly Ice Capades. That means we're all stuck indoors snuggling under blankets while filling up on blood-warming carbohydrates and brain-blanketing alcoholic beverages. When the snow melts and you can actually drive in public without worrying about raising your car insurance premiums, you'll need to find something more active to do in the cold weather to work off all those calories besides digging your car out of a slush filled ditch.

There are several ways to get active when the temperature drops to colder than average, some of which you can also do and see all year round.

1. ICE! at the Gaylord Texan DFW's biggest hotel that makes sales associates the envy of their competition simply by telling them where they'll be staying has plenty of room for a big, extravagant Christmas affair and this time, "big" has an exact weight of 2 million pounds. The resort has flown in 1,000 tons of carefully carved ice for their new ice sculpture exhibit that features recreated scenes from the iconic Nutcracker ballet, an "ice city" of China and an all-ice recreation of downtown New York City at Christmas time.

2. The Dallas/Fort Worth Curling Club Curling might sound like one of those sports that would have as much to do with Texas as that sport invented by The Kids in the Hall with six grown men chained around a poisoning spitting snake, but DFW actually has only one of three operating curling facilities in the whole state. The Dallas/Fort Worth Curling Club regularly holds open sessions to teach the sport to anyone who's interested in picking up broom.

3. Learn Hockey at the Ice Training Center Hockey is another sport that doesn't seem it can win the hearts pigskin-worshiping Texans. Richardson's Ice Training Center offers an open rink in any kind of weather but they also offer lessons and clinics on the sport so you don't fall flat on your face the first time you step out on the ice, even though such a moment is usually more hilarious than most actual regulation hockey games.

4. Panther Island Ice If you don't mind the bracing cold of the occasional Texas ice storm, you can experience true ice skating at Fort Worth's first and newest outdoor ice skating rink. The Trinity River Authority's Panther Island Ice offers an open air skating rink at the old Coyote Drive-In so you can feel the bracing wind of Mother Nature as you try to remain cool on perhaps the first sheet of skate-able outdoor ice that most local natives have ever seen.
