Diamonds are a girl's best friend. Especially now, as she fearfully cashes them in rather than rely on her 401(k), which now looks more like a paycheck from a part-time job than a secure future. But the power of a diamond can impact a whole lot more than just your wallet thanks to hip-hop pioneer Russell Simmons and his Diamond Empowerment Fund. His international nonprofit raises money and awareness of African countries where diamonds are a resource but people remain economically disadvantaged. Simmons brings D.E.F.'s efforts to Dallas with their first major fund-raiser Friday, where he'll join Emmitt Smith and his wife to host the event, which honors NBA legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson. So, this is kind of a big deal. The Dallas Rocks 2008 Diamond Dinner will be held Friday at Cityplace Tower, 2711 Haskell Ave. at Central Expressway, starting with a champagne reception at 6:30 p.m. For reservations, call 972-715-6427 or visit DallasRocks.org.
