TBAAL's (Texas Black Academy of Arts and Letters) 15th Annual Christmas/Kwanzaa Concert features the choirs of just about every high school in South Dallas and Oak Cliff. Singing teens from Roosevelt, A. Maceo Smith, Madison, South Oak Cliff, Carter and Lincoln will take the stage along with the kids of Umphrey Lee Elementary to sing "hymns, spirituals, gospel and classical music" that will lift your spirits or drop your eyelids, depending on your point of view. We'd much rather hear the Townview High School Band rock out Darlene Love's "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" or Run-D.M.C.'s "Christmas in Hollis," but then again, perhaps that's why we got turned down for that DISD choir director gig. Honestly, we haven't heard much Kwanzaa music, but judging from the meager selection on Amazon, you're in for either a lot of spoken word or some selections by the Staple Singers (if you're lucky). The 15th Annual TBAAL Christmas/Kwanzaa Concert takes place 8 p.m. Saturday on the Naomi Bruton Main Stage of the Dallas Convention Center Theatre Complex, located at 650 S. Griffin St. Admission is $10. For tickets, call 214-743-2400 or visit the TBAAL box office. Oh yeah, did we mention the bell choir? No? Well, there's probably a reason for that.
