Kixpo Is a Sneakerhead's Paradise

Sneakers, sneakers everywhere.
Sneakers, sneakers everywhere.
Kixpo

The largest event of its kind, Kixpo is an enormous expo full of vendors showcasing sneakers and streetwear both regional and national. The event was first held in a Deep Ellum warehouse back in 2007, drawing a crowd of 800. Attendance has grown so much each year that Kixpo actually took place at Cowboys Stadium in 2011 and again in 2012, with over 4,500 attending. This Saturday Kixpo 2015 heads to Deep Ellum's The Bomb Factory.

At Kixpo, sneakerheads can show off their collections, make friends with other enthusiasts and search for rare pairs. The event attracts local and regional vendors with start-up brands you won’t find in chain stores. People travel from all over the country to buy, trade and sell sneakers and streetwear in pop-up shops. There is also no shortage of national brands that show up to take part, some using the event as a platform to premiere new products. DJs will do sets throughout the event and there is even a Mortal Kombat X tournament, but bring your own controller.

Kixpo appeals to many different types of people. There are connoisseurs who dig deep into their pockets, those who are looking for a particular shoe they missed, or casual fans who just want to check out the current state of streetwear. Even Brian Gibb, owner of The Public Trust contemporary art gallery, has an affinity for Nike: Jordan Retro, Lebron lifestyle sneakers and Dunk Highs and Lows. “I am a fan of sneakers,” says Gibb. But he is looking for shoes to wear, unlike many who show up to stock up and add to their collection. “Producing sneakers that leave an indelible mark on culture is an impressive feat and not easily accomplished,” Gibb continues. “When art and design intersect in sneakers or other forms of fashion, it can be really amazing and blur the line.”

Kixpo takes place at 2 p.m. Saturday at The Bomb Factory, 2713 Canton St., $15-$50. For tickets, visit thebombfactory.com.
