A self-taught composer and performer who combined mainstream classical, avant-garde, jazz, R&B and electro-acoustic music, Frank Zappa most definitely could make a dynamo hum. Not familiar with the master guitarist/satirist’s work? Well, then mount up on your pygmy pony and head to the University of North Texas’ College of Music as it hosts Zappa Unlocked: The Mars/Barrow Connection. Bassist and alumnus Arthur Barrow and keyboardist Tommy Mars, two former Zappa band members, will perform “Chunga’s Revenge,” “Cosmik Debris” and other Zappa tunes. Join Barrow and Mars as they teach students at the Music of Frank Zappa class at UNT about broadening their musical horizons. You’ll also hear personal anecdotes about auditioning, touring and running rehearsals as Zappa’s protégés. The show starts at 8 p.m. in Voertman Hall in the UNT Music Building at Avenue C and Chestnut Street. Admission is free, but donations benefiting the UNT Division of Composition Studies are accepted at the door. For more information, call 940-565-4926 or email [email protected].
