Old. That's how I felt after I agreed to write about the upcoming performance of Gordon Lightfoot at Nokia Theatre. My feelings were exacerbated even further when I turned to the Nokia Web site, which described the singer-songwriter's style as "time-defying" and his hits as "legendary." Small wonder no one else on the Observer staff asked to write about him. They're all younger than me. Well, me and Schutze, but he's always busy writing about stuff that matters. Not that Gordon Lightfoot doesn't matter. He certainly did to me in college when I was radicalized by the music of Dylan--Lightfoot'’s strongest influence--and when I first heard Lightfoot's hits like "Sundown," "If You Could Read My Mind" and, as embarrassing as it now sounds, "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald." You know, I went to a Simon & Garfunkel concert at the AAC a few years back and was thoroughly entertained and moved. Just because the Lightfoot has seen 70 doesn't mean the guy can't rock, right? Schutze, come on, help me here. Not surprisingly the show is for "all ages," and tickets range from $39.50 to $59.50. Lightfoot is here for one night only, performing at 8 p.m. Wednesday.
