Once upon a time, Robert Ryman worked as a guard at New York's Museum of Modern Art. Day in and day out he watched people admire the works of art hanging from the museum walls. Over the next 40 years, Ryman created his own masterpieces, exploring the many tones of white and how versatile the color really is (both in vision and mood) when used with a variety of textures and surfaces. Skip ahead to the happily ever after part of the story, and you can now view more than two dozen of his paintings on display in his own exhibition, Robert Ryman—complete with guards of its own.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: Jan. 5. Continues through April 2
