Papa 'Rita

When I got my first guitar at age 12, my dad had one question and one question only for me: "When do you learn to play 'Margaritaville'?" Horrified at the thought of playing anything other than Jewel songs on the instrument, I pushed all thoughts of Jimmy Buffett to the back of my mind. It wouldn't be until years later, post-college graduation, on a trip to Cancun with my parents, that I would understand the true genius of Buffett. I found myself sitting in a "Margaritaville"-themed restaurant in Mexico, with a parrot-shaped balloon on my head, knocking back 'ritas with Dad and Mom, laughing and chatting about the days of yore. Truly, Jimmy had brought my family together in the name of the 'rita, and I was grateful. In honor of JB, I interviewed my father, Mansfield, Texas' foremost Jimmy Buffett authority. Why is Jimmy Buffett a great American songwriter? Said Dad: "Because he writes great songs." What is the secret to being a "parrot head," as Buffett fans are known? After a little consideration, Dad replied, "It takes a certain amount of lettin' go." You can let go this Friday during Jimmy's concert at Smirnoff Music Centre, 1818 First Ave, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $36-$126. Call 214-421-1111.
