The Nasher Sculpture Center has announced that New York-based artist Rachel Harrison will design the tenth and final project in the Nasher XChange, the first museum-organized, citywide art exhibition in the country, running from October 19 through February 16, 2014.

Her contribution will be a giant pink arrow at Dallas City Hall, pointing at Henry Moore's 1978 The Dallas Piece. Harrison got the idea for the work on a recent visit to City Hall when she noticed that Moore's sculpture, which looks sort of like giant bronze pelvic bones, was surrounded by barricades.
Long intrigued by similar guardrails surrounding statues in museums, Harrison's arrow is meant to call attention to both Moore's sculpture and the barricades (though the barricades have been removed after Harrison inquired about them). The piece will also explore the way we interact with public art and encourage people to give another look to a sculpture they may have passed over.
City Hall is a fitting site for the last XChange installation, since the building itself, designed by I.M. Pei, was an attempt to re-imagine Dallas in a forward-looking way after the JFK assassination. The arrow will be at a complementary angle to the building.
Harrison has work in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and in the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Her bio boasts that a critic once described her as a maker of "'what-the-hell-is-that?' sculpture." Her previous installations have such titles as "Posh Floored as Ali G Tackles Beck," "Claud Levi-Strauss," the latter made with wood, cement, two United States Postal Service shipping boxes and a taxidermy chicken and rooster. This will be her first publicly commissioned work.
