Where would you expect to see an original work by the great Pablo Picasso or Henri Matisse? What about Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, Rembrandt van Rijn, Piet Mondrian or Paul Gauguin? Most folks would venture a museum or Christie's auction, possibly an art gallery if it were big-time. But shockingly, many Texans--starting with the oil boom--established their own private, and very impressive, collections of European art. The Kimbell Art Museum showcases the prize possessions of more than 40 such collectors, with more than 100 pieces created from approximately 700 B.C. to the 1940s. From the Private Collections of Texas: European Art, Ancient to Modern features works from the aforementioned legends and others and opens Sunday, running through March 21, 2010. The museum is closed Mondays and is located at 3333 Camp Bowie Blvd. Visit kimbellart.org.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: Nov. 22. Continues through March 21, 2009
