Before Goosebumps and Harry Potter invaded every elementary school's Scholastic book fair, Sideways Stories from Wayside School ruled the K-5 world. The charming, nonsensical stories of 30 weirdo students had little in the way of life-long lessons; boys and girls slept through class, pulled pigtails, talked to dead rats, turned teachers into apples and learned to tango, but Texan Louis Sachar (Holes) filled his book's creations with much more wit and character than you'd expect from a busy, goofy children's book. This is good news for parents, because Rover Dramawerks' children's theater adaptation at Cox Building Playhouse, 1527 H Ave. in Plano, has the book's all-ages charm and humor, making this play much more fun for both you and the kids than Barney. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday (with various additional times and dates through July 30).
