Stuck In A Movement Loop

Chess tournaments have lost intensity on the national level since, say, the Cold War ended. True, chess is the game of kings, an ultimate test of strategy and has been used by brooding, Scandinavian directors to represent man’s attempts to cheat death. But without the reputation of capitalism at stake, where’s the urgency? Where’s the drama? Well, does more than $9,000 in prizes strike you as dramatic? The first round of the 79th Annual Southwest Open starts at 7:45 p.m. Friday at the DFW Airport North DoubleTree, 4441 W. John Carpenter Freeway in Irving. If you’re there to play, registration begins at 6:15 p.m. (we’re assuming it will be prompt since there will be so many timers present) and the tournament runs until Monday. On-site registration fees cost $99, $90 for junior players and $65 for seniors. We hope all local evil geniuses can make it out. Contact
