Don’t know an armature from an architrave? Does a balustrade sound like a piece of maddening Scandinavian furniture? It’s OK. Despite all the fancy words, architecture is way open-source these days, drawing from and contributing to popular art and communication in a way that’s never happened before. In other words, you don’t need to have a stack of Venturi books on your coffee table to get that architectural design shapes the world around us. The local chapter of the American Institute of Architects invites you to see the blurred lines between architecture and popular culture for yourself during the annual AIA Dallas Tour of Homes from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Take in design, topography and all the cantilevers and joists you can handle on a self-guided tour through 10 thoroughly stunning modern homes throughout Dallas. Tickets to the event are $30, and may be purchased at hometourdallas.com, where you can also find a description of and a map to each featured home.
