Leave it to Dr. Seuss to have a secret art collection. Theodor Seuss Geisel--the man known for such whimsical classics as If I Ran the Circus, Horton Hears a Who and, of course, The Cat in the Hat--is the subject of the latest retrospective and national touring exhibition of Storyopolis Fine Art, the Los Angeles gallery (in a new joint location with the 4th Wall Gallery in Dallas) dedicated to the works of illustrators whose creations populate our childhoods. Through August 8, Storyopolis will celebrate the esteemed Dr. Seuss' 70-year career with art from his secret collection, works from his early career as an editorial cartoonist, drawings from advertisements and illustrations from the books generations of children have known and loved. The exhibition, The Art of Dr. Seuss, also includes pieces from Dr. Seuss' "Unorthodox Taxidermy," such as the "Goo-Goo-Eyed Tasmanian Wolghast," which sounds scary but is actually just this side of huggable. (Like most of Seuss' characters, the Wolghast is sort of hairy and wears a huge, endearing smile.) Fun fact: Dr. Seuss wrote Green Eggs and Ham on a bet he couldn't make a whole book out of just 50 words. Would he, could he? You'll have to read it to find out.
