The real reason for the season is the moment when the earth is tilted furthest away from the sun, resulting in the longest night of the year--otherwise known as the winter solstice. Even ancient cultures recognized this midpoint, after which the days lengthen in the approach of spring. Whether you call it Christmas, Yule, or something else entirely, come welcome the return of the light at the Winter SolstiCelebration, 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Cathedral of Hope, 5910 Cedar Springs Road.
