Thrilling Rain

How Barnum and Bailey's circus is still in business I'll never know because these modern cirques blow that stuff out of the cannon. I never quite understood applauding when elephants prop up on each other's back with their front legs or the mundane acrobatics of kids swinging bar to bar. Even without a net. But give me a cirque show and I'm dumbfounded by every detail, from the artistry of the avant-garde costuming to the dramatic music that aids the telling of tall tales in the most fantastical ways. Watching a cirque is literally like witnessing art coming to life and ends up being an experience that's both real and surreal...imprinted in your mind forever. Just trust me. See what I mean with Cirque Eloize's latest production Rain. Director Daniele Finzi Pasca will offer not only rain falling onstage but metaphoric messages and signs will also fall from the "sky." Rain will evoke "a sense of nostalgia, like a strange need to go back to the house you came from, the house where a family once lived, where your roots are." I don't get it either, but I'm hoping to check it out anyway. Cirque Eloize: Rain runs Tuesday through December 16 at the Majestic Theatre, 1925 Elm St. For performance schedule and tickets call 214-631-2787 or visit
