Wiggle Room

The first punk rock show I ever saw was the Dead Kennedys. It ruined me for life. From the stage, the band's wiry, spastic front man seemed more like a conspiracy-crazed preacher than a singer, a political firecracker perpetually poised on the point of detonation. This was Jello Biafra, one-time San Francisco mayoral candidate and all-around troublemaker. He seems to court controversy at every opportunity. Everything from the name of his band to his lyrics was calculated to piss people off. Here was a man who was not happy with the way America was being run and wasn't afraid to scream about it. The DKs long ago disbanded; ever since, Jello has been on a one-man spoken-word crusade, still espousing his political outrage to anyone who will listen. Jello's tirades are biting, incisive and, most important, freaking hilarious. He is as charismatic as they come and has a lot to say about everything that is wrong with the world we live in. Come witness this rare opportunity to see the legend in person 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Granada Theater, 3524 Greenville Ave. There's always room for Jello.
