If chintz makes you cringe and fringe makes you break out in a sweat, the clean lines of affordable furniture at West Elm will make you jump with joy. The first West Elm in the Dallas area—and only the second in Texas—the airy Mockingbird Station store makes furniture shops offering the overstuffed and multipillowed sofas that are so popular in Dallas seem fusty and old-fashioned. West Elm's upholstered furniture comes in leather and solid fabrics to provide a backdrop for sculptural tables, bookshelves and storage pieces in wood, steel and laminate. The look is mid-century modern meets second-millennium luxury. Sofas and modular seating range from $749 to $2,000. West Elm also specializes in practical but cool home office furniture—never easy to find. Then there's that behind-the-scene stuff: closet organization, office storage and "spa storage" in solid teak. Spa storage...who knew that was a category of case goods? The translation: "a place to keep your towels and soap in the bathroom." All that simplicity can get a tad boring, so West Elm also has a spattering of what might be called '50s Follies, such as cascading capiz shell lamps, sunburst wall mirrors and clocks, and hanging squares of stainless steel which can be linked as a room divider. Even though she might have looked prim and proper, June Cleaver wasn't boring.

Burglars Clean Out House Of South Dallas Woman

Burglars cleaned out the house of an elderly North Texas woman, and no one in the neighborhood admits to seeing anything.

Victoria Hobbs recently moved to Texas from Kansas, saying she wanted to be closer to family.

Her dreams of a new beginning, in a new home, in a new city, have now been shattered.

Burglars broke the door frame to her new house in South Dallas, busted through a deadbolt and took nearly everything inside. They even emptied out and stole the contents of her cabinets.

The grandmother even had several Christmas presents stolen. She had hidden several gifts for her grandchildren in the cabinets and burglars made away with them.

Some of the furniture that was stolen had just been delivered. Her sofa, entertainment center, dining room set and beds are all gone. "I can't believe they can take a whole household and nobody could see it, or hear it, or know that they're out there with a crowbar breaking a door out of the building," Hobbs said.

Hobbs does have insurance but it just covers the actual building structure. She says since she was still in the process of moving in she didn't have the contents insured yet.

The break happened sometime between Wednesday and Friday when she was away from the house. "Maybe it was a blessing that I wasn't totally moved in yet, because someone that will take all your stuff won't think twice to hurt you," said Hobbs.

Hobbs was disabled after she was hit by a drunk driver 20 years ago. The grandmother said she came to North Texas to be close to family and for surgery and rehabilitation.

The crooks left bloody fingerprints inside the house, but police have yet to match them with any ones on file.

Hobbs told CBS 11 News that she used up her life savings on the move and the new house. She and her daughter bought the house together, with Hobbs living on the bottom floor and her daughter on top.
