Best Radio DJ Dallas 2008 - Paul Slavens

Readers' Choice: Readers' pick: Kidd Kraddick (KHKS-106.1 FM)

With his soothing voice, Paul Slavens sounds like your standard National Public Radio personality. But Slavens is so much more. He's a composer, an improv musical comedy genius (his Monday night residency onstage at Dan's Silverleaf in Denton is becoming legendary) and, best of all, a go-to source for locally produced songs and long-forgotten gems. He comes to his knowledge rightfully as the former frontman for the jazz-rock combo Ten Hand, an act that once graced the stages of Deep Ellum. But now that he's older and, um, balder, he remains entrenched in the local scene thanks to his calming, end-of-the-weekend, listen-and-let-the-world-slow-down-for-a-second radio show.

Paul is undoubtedly one of the best DJs in the area, and that's just the beginning. As host of 90.1@Night, Paul resurrects and reprises some wonderful and delicious tunes that are quite eclectic. What makes his show so fascinating to listen to, is that you never know what might play next. I think that's the fun of this program. Needless to say, it is one of the few places where you can actually REQUEST a song, and often hear it -- unlike many other stations and DJs who are there to give P.R. value to their superficial listeners, and entertain them more by putting their oh-so-excited sound blurbs on the air, so long as they request something that is already on the play list.

90.1@Night is always fun, interesting, and exposes its listeners to a mind-boggling array of great music and some intriguing oddities.

Thanks, Paul, for making our Sunday nights such a great time!
