Buster Cooper can't stop dancing. Now in his mid-80s, the veteran tap master still teaches new generations of hoofers the intricacies of the art form he pioneered in Dallas more than 60 years ago. For half a century Cooper owned his own studio, and for 30 years he served as head of the dance department at Hockaday School. Patrick Swayze and Sandy Duncan are among his alumni and others have gone on to dance on Broadway in leading roles in A Chorus Line, 42nd Street and Cats. This summer the twinkly titan of tap took the stage in a special pre-show spectacular at the Dallas Summer Musicals' performance of The Drowsy Chaperone. His technique still is flawless, his crowd appeal greater than ever. Thanks, Buster, for giving your life to Dallas' dancers and never shuffling off to Buffalo.

My Voice Nation Help

I hope everyone enjoyed Buster Cooper’s 90th celebration today.

Maybe someone could please ask aloud, "Where is Gina Carrico?" Gina was Chairperson for the event, President of DCNT, personal friend and student of Buster Cooper for over 40 years. After Gina had spent 3 months laying the foundation for the party, hosted the web page, taking reservations, ticket sales, coordinating food, printing, T-shirts, dance floor and decorations, all in addition to her five day a week regular job.

Without warning or explanation Gina was told, 5 days before the event, by the Bozo’s Big Top, Tracy Jordan and Michael Jenkins, the venue would be cancelled! This caused Gina to experience many sleepless nights and several hours of crying. She only wanted this to be a memorable event for her beloved Buster! Bozo’s Big Top apparently felt they had lost control of their star elephant. After Sally took over DCNT President, she was able to reestablish the event only if Gina did NOT attend!

I don’t take it well when someone hurts the ones I love! Sadly, my making this statement, will probably result in some banishment from attending events under the Music Hall’s big top, but, frankly my dear I don't give a damn!

Thank You,

I danced at his studio back in the early 1970's. What a pleasure to know and learn under him. Thank you for your technique and professionalism. You are a blessing to the dance world even to the ones that just enjoyed the dance and would never make it further!
