For decades, people have traveled northbound over the Trinity River to hear live music in Dallas, and rarely was it the opposite. But in 2010, the year Edwin Cabaniss reopened the 70-year-old Kessler Theater in North Oak Cliff, all that started to change. The shows being booked at The Kessler rivaled and often trumped shows happening elsewhere in town. The key ingredient was in hiring one of the founding fathers of Deep Ellum, Jeff Liles, to manage the place. Thanks to his booking, a healthy mix of local bands and legendary national artists including the likes of St. Vincent have graced the stage, as well as some reunited Dallas rock alumni like Chomsky, Earl Harvin and Mike Dillon.

Thank you so much for highlighting the Kessler. My first experience there was a Dan Dyer show in 2010. It couldn't have been a more wonderful place to experience Dan's music. When I describe The Kessler to friends, I describe it as a music lover's listening room - the sound has consistently been great, the people are friendly, and the artists the guys book are awesome. LOVE that place! CONGRATS to everyone there!
Now aren't you the same Soundpam who only last week was accusing the Observer of purposely omitting the Kessler from the best of the weekend list? Jeez. How quickly we forget. Well, from here on out I hope you remember this award the next time you want to accuse others of bad motive(s).

Great choice!!!! Something I've never seen mentioned (& IMO would make a GREAT story) is the Kessler's community outreach. Instead of a venue that just books what's popular, the Kessler books a little bit of everything with emphasis on the community - children's plays & groups on the weekends, R & B/HipHop nights w/ local Oak Cliff superstars, various Latino & Tejano groups, great jazz, folk, Christian & much, much more along with the expected nationally known names & local heros. On top of all that, they showcase local artists as well. A great venue & great people serving a great community. In short, a venue Dallas should be VERY proud of!
