Cowboys Stadium is a Busy, Beautiful Place
Worst seat in the house. Not too terrible.
Spent most of yesterday out at Jonestown Coliseum, better known as Cowboys Stadium. Second time I've been there since the doors have opened for business, and I realize it'll probably take a year of visits to discover/enjoy every nook and cranny.
*As for the not-so-well-hung Jumbo Jerry, the giant crane remained and workers were obviously installing some sort of pulley system atop the roof. I know owner Jerry Jones is defiant about not moving the video boards - and he should be, it was built to NFL specs - but, c'mon, the thing has to be raised. Right? At the NFL's expense, of course.
*Last year's open practice at Texas Stadium drew about 15,000 fans. Given the new stadium and the free admission, wouldn't be surprised to see that number tripled tonight. Gates open at 5, practice starts at 6. Parking is $10. Former players scheduled to sign autographs include: Larry Brown, Tony Casillas, Dixon Edwards, Walt Garrison, Charles Haley, Drew Pearson, Preston Pearson and Charlie Williams.

*Speaking of bargains, I checked out the details of the $29 party pass. And I'm not just saying this: Unbelievable. Get there early enough and for $29 you can be standing about four feet from a guy who paid more than $100 to sit. There are three levels of standing-room only, the lowest of which is actually a great view. There are rails to lean on and sit drinks on, a fancy schmancy club you'll have access to and decent views of JumboJerry from the massive stairwells.
*Sneaked in to the exclusive "Legends Bar" where Jerry will rub elbows with the fast movers and violent shakers and it's, um, Dallas decadent. Looks like the Ghost Bar. Wanna see? ...
*Though the blue star at mid-field, the Ring of Honor and the championship banners will be ready for the Sept. 20 opener against the Giants, the joint's Hall of Fame won't be ready until next season. In fact, I'm told there is 12-month punch list. Wow.
*I went and sat in the stadium's supposed worst seat. Upper Concourse, Section 431, Row 22, Seat 1. In other words, in the corner of the end zone, top row, highest seat in the building. And I gotta admit: Not bad. $8 beer. $5.50 hot dogs. From up there even the crane looked like an ant, but JumboJerry works as a magnifying glass. And a season ticket in that seat goes for only $59 per game. Yes, the place is opulent. Yes it feels as much 5-star hotel as football field. But it's just wrong to say that Jerry has totally priced out the blue-collar fan. Put them in the rafters? Yes. Made them stand up the whole game? Absolutely. But priced them about altogether? Nope.
