Texas Stadium Has Only 26 Days to Live
Maybe I'm a sentimental old fool, but I'm going to miss the iconic eyesore called Texas Stadium.
I'm all for progress and upgrades and the future-is-now and I love Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, but I saw a story on the news last night about the preparations being made to blow up Texas Stadium and it yanked me nostalgic.
Sure the place had become a dump. Dingy roof. Faded, peeling paint. Standing water most everywhere. But to me it was, and always will be, the house that Tom Landry built. It was the playground for Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman and Tony Dorsett.
I'll miss going there.
It's going to be so weird driving 183 or Loop 12 or seeing our area's most cherished trophy case reduced to rubble.
And I'm not real happy that it's not getting a proper funeral.
The City of Irving is charging $25 per car to watch the implosion, set for dawn on April 11. Kraft is sponsoring the event, and some 11-year-old - 11? - from Terrell - Terrell? - will push the plunger.
What in the name of Tex Schramm is going on here?
When I interviewed Staubach back in December he volunteered to push the button. I'm sure the kid is wonderful and all, but he's seen one Cowboys' playoff win in his life. Never saw Aikman complete a pass. Never experienced a Super Bowl. Probably couldn't pass a Cowboys trivia quiz.
It's like the Stars winning a Stanley Cup and having me emcee the parade. Just doesn't feel right, ya know?
I'd like to see Staubach, Aikman, Dorsett, Randy White, Emmitt Smith etc. all line up in front of the old building, each deliver a quick eulogy and then simultaneously hit plungers, one of which - unbeknownst to us all - will actually crater the place.
Anybody else bugged by this?
