Whitt's End: 1.30.09
Whether you're at the end of your rope or merely the end of your week, welcome to Whitt's End:
*So who you rootin' for in the Super Bowl: The Steelers, who have former Cowboys' safety Ray Horton on their coaching staff? Or the Cardinals, who have former Cowboys' assistants Clancy Pendergast and Todd Haley on theirs? For those of you curious, the case of Haley's wife and the Southlake McDonald's rat got McSettled.
*Always said 1310 AM The Ticket was on top of its game at Super Bowl week. In accordance, the station made national headlines both good and bad. Though, to be fair, the bad wasn't completely its fault. Right?
*Of all the zany Super Bowl proposition bets, give me: "Heads"/ "Go Daddy" as the highest-rated commercial/ and "God" as the first person thanked by the MVP.
*Best rivalry in sports? Lakers-Celtics? Red Sox-Yankees? Cardinals-Steelers? Tiger Woods-The Field? Forget it. Try, Rafael Nadal-Roger Federer. The men who have won 14 of tennis' last 15 Grand Slams meet for the first time in a hardcourt final Saturday night for the Australian Open championship. Even if you don't like tennis, you'll like watching their contrasting styles and utter brilliance. Trust me.
*So your Mavs won't trade Dirk Nowitzki and they'll likely re-sign Jason Kidd. What, then, are their assets to use to get better? Josh Howard has value and he definitely needs/wants a change of scenery. But you know what makes the most sense: Jason Terry. His value will never be higher.
*The Stars won the season series from the Detroit Red Wings, 3-1. We now return you to your regularly scheduled spot at 7th place in the NHL's Western Conference standings.
*My old Fort Worth-Star Telegram boss Jim Witt got himself in a pickle this week. When detailing via email how he basically cherishes columnist Jennifer Floyd Engel over columnist Gil LeBreton, Witt sent the missive to the entire organization instead of only the fine folks in human resources. Oops. I'm supposed to be surprised, but this is the same guy who - at his introductory meeting with the whole staff, no less - yelled for maintenance to "come unlock this door" even though said door was clearly swung wide open and propped ajar by a door stop. In other words, I'm not surprised. Not one bit.
*Love my wife. Love, love, loooooove her. But ... She goes to the store this week and buys me a bag of these Lundberg Rice Chips that I really like. But what flavor? One guess. That's right: Sea Salt. If it was a joke, touche. Damn funny. If it wasn't ...
*Swear, I don't get American Idol.
Some Almost all of the "contestants" are just manufacturing their 15 seconds of fame. Right?
*Good gawd, if you're not ready for the big switch to digital TV by now, you never will be.
*Bruce Springsteen = Yawn. Sounding good shouldn't look that difficult.
*There are "soft openings", and then there is Newy Scruggs officially announcing his new job on 105.3 The Fan via his Facebook page. Curious.
*You were born an orginal. Don't die a copy.
*I'm pulling hard for Bob Hayes to make the Pro Football Hall of Fame tomorrow. You?
*Steelers 23, Cardinals 17.
*If you missed my weekly column in the dead-tree version of the Sportatorium, it's right here and the accompanying slideshow from Rangers' Fan Fest is right here. If you want to hear me on 105.3 The Fan this weekend it's Saturday 4-7 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m.-Noon.
